Renovation of a rural house and multiple additions for an extended family residence.
The design involves the renovation of a derelict rural residence outside the mountain village of Elaiochori in Arcadia, Greece. The old ruin sits in an olive grove on the mountain slope, overlooking the village. Besides the renovation of the old residence unit, the project required multiple additions, which could shelter the changeable demands of an extended family through a network of living and sleeping areas formulating varying living clusters according to different occupation models. The old stone building was conceived as the container of the main living space of the residence, while all additional spaces – ranging from 1 to 3 bedrooms with or without office and additional living spaces – were accommodated into a linear extension constructed of light metal material. The new volumes develop with respect to the existing olive trees and ground conditions, while they define a series of courtyards with varying levels of privacy.
